To work in one style of painting has always been quite limiting for me. The little inner voice tells me to express the creative message in whatever style gives it meaning and beauty. A number of years ago I came up with a title that would best describe what I thought my art was, I called it Impressionistic Idealism. To this day it instills my focus and direction; how I see the real creative world at my easel.

In studying cultural symbolism such as Chinese, Tibetan and other world arts, have worked to elevate my paintings in harmony and content. William Morris famous 19th to 20th century designer/artist and other artists as well I’ve found have been influenced by the Asian arts over the centuries.

An old familiar violin is mounted on this painting. It was my mother’s
violin and remember listening to her practice when I was a young boy.
Her violin teacher told her she was gifted but would need to get
a better instrument if she wanted to progress. My parents couldn’t afford
a more expensive one so she made do. She was musical, artistic
and wrote beautiful words in a poetic way.

Inspired by a book on artifacts from Tibet one particular page displayed beautiful, brocaded silk 17th and18th century ceremonial jackets. The colorful floral images gave me the idea for this painting of an imaginary Tibetan, garden oasis.

Years in the Making

In the late 1960′s I was art director of the Commercial Sign & Design Division of Naegele Outdoor Advertising Company. At that time, as a young artist, I was experimenting with different styles and forms of artistic expression. I once drew an intricate study of a group of horses in different stances and poses, intertwined with one another. I don’t recall much more about the drawing or what I intended to do with it, except, it was to be a painting. Life moved on, I put the drawing in a portfolio with other drawings and papers and was forgotten for many years.

A year or so ago going through some old art things, to my surprise, there it was after forty years. I recently painted the horses on a sheet of Arches heavy weight, handmade, paper, which was also in the portfolio with the drawing. This is a one-of-a-kind painting, meant for a horse lover, or someone who wishes to own a truly original, unique, piece of art.

In my research, I’ve discovered, the dawn of the horse goes back to America where the only fossils of Eohippus, the ancestor of the modern horse have been found. Over millions of years, until the last ice age separated America from the rest of the world, herds of horses migrated across land bridges to Asia and other places beyond. Shown in this illustration are representations of the prehistoric cave painting from 15,000 B.C. in Lascaux, France, a depiction of a charioteer in the Sumerian infantry 2,500 B.C. and a symbolic statue of the horse (Equus caballus). At the top of the painting silhouetted against the blue starry sky are six horses running on the backs of their heritage, each representing 10 million years of existence.

In a cove off a small tropical island in the South Pacific where many exotic fish live were three very colorful little fishes. Growing up together they became best friends. They joined the glee club, varsity swim team, the Bay School newspaper and of course kept their colorful sense of humor to stave off the big sharks.

railroad baron James J. Hill at the turn of 20th century.
